A bicyclist is in a medically-induced coma after being the victim of a serious hit and run accident in Encinitas. The accident occurred on North Coast Highway 101 near Basil Street. The vehicle was reportedly a Mercedes-Benz C series and fled the scene after striking the bicyclist, who was riding in a shared bike and auto lane, called a sharrow. Police are searching for the driver.

The victim’s friends and family continue to try to locate the driver by placing flyers in nearby businesses and by posting to Facebook. According to some reports, the area is noted as being dangerous for bike riders because vehicles often get dangerously close to them. This accident happened at night, so visibility could have played a role.

Dangers for Bicyclists
Bicycle riders on the road face a number of dangers. Bicyclists can take some precautions to improve their safety on the roadways. Cyclists should always wear helmets. When driving at night, it is essential for cyclists to utilize lights and wear reflective clothing so they can better be seen by drivers. Bike riders and motorists should follow all traffic rules. City riders need to be cautious of drivers turning in front of them and of doorings (when they can be hit by drivers opening their parked car doors in front of them).

Regardless of how careful a bike rider is, he or she is still in danger of being hit by a vehicle. Unfortunately, many of these accidents result in serious injuries or fatalities. When a bicyclist is hit by a rapidly-moving vehicle, there is little he or she can do to protect him or herself. Some of the most common injuries incurred in bicycle accidents include back and neck injuries, broken bones, and head trauma. In the case above, the woman suffered a severe head injury.

What to Do After an Accident
Victims of bicycle accidents must seek medical treatment immediately following a crash. Police will investigate the crash and interview any witnesses. If the driver flees the scene, the cyclist or witnesses may be able to provide details to help police locate the vehicle. If the crash happened near an intersection or outside a business, there may be surveillance video showing the accident.

Drivers are responsible for safe operation of their vehicles at all times. Simply stating that they did not see a bicyclist may not be an excuse for having hit him or her. A vehicle must be operated at a safe speed. If road or weather conditions are poor, the driver should slow down to make sure he or she can see the road.

Those who were seriously hurt in bicycle crashes may face extensive medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and may suffer long term disabilities. A negligent driver is responsible for providing compensation for these costs as well as punitive damages such as money for pain and suffering and lost wages.
