Boating is one of the most popular recreational activities in the area. While it is a fun activity, it can also be dangerous. Accidents happen on the water; just last week four people suffered injuries when a boat and jet ski collided near Ski Beach. The boating accident occurred off the east side of Vacation Isle and San Diego Fire-Rescue responded. The 28-year-old Jet Ski driver was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center. The other victims reportedly suffered minor injuries. Unfortunately, boating accidents are all too common.

Boating Accident Statistics
There were 322 reported boating accidents in Southern California in 2016. Of those accidents there were 116 injuries and 14 deaths. Just over half of all boating accidents in the state occur in Southern California. The number of boating accidents has increased in 2016 over 2015, when there were 282 accidents.

Of the accidents with fatal injuries, six occurred on the southern coast, six in southern lakes, and two in southern rivers. The top areas where boating crashes occurred were in the Pacific Ocean, Newport Harbor, San Diego Bay and the Colorado River. In San Diego County, 57% occurred because of a collision with another vessel and 43% were attributed to operator inattention. 46% of the accidents occurred with cabin motorboats and 34% were in auxiliary sailboats.

Prevention of Boating Accidents
Boating accidents are preventable. Many boating crashes happen because of the inexperience of the operator or because of distracted boating. Boat operators should not consume alcohol while on the water because it could cause serious lack of judgment. Boaters need to be aware of other vessels on the water and practice safe boating practices. Operators must follow the rules of the waterways. Operators should maintain a safe speed at all times. Weather conditions should be checked before getting out on the water. Life jackets should be worn by all passengers aboard the vessel.

The California Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) offers courses and training for boaters across the state. DBW partners with various organizations to provide boating safety education to people of all ages. A California Boating Home Study Course is available and an online Personal Water Craft Course is also available. Aquatic center courses provide on-water training through local organizations, public agencies, and universities. Boat operators should take a course to ensure they know how to practice safe boating and learn what to do in case of an emergency.

What to Do After a Boating Accident
Victims of boating accidents may suffer serious injuries. Sometimes these injuries lead to a lifelong disability. If you were hurt in a boating accident that was not your fault, you may need to take legal action. An experienced personal injury attorney will assist you in filing a claim and protecting your rights. The negligent party may be required to provide the victim with compensation for medical costs, rehabilitation expenses, and money for pain and suffering and for other damages incurred.
