There are some situations in which you are not sure if a dog is aggressive, and you have no idea it’s going to bite until it happens. However, there are many other situations in which it is clear that the dog is agitated and acting in an aggressive manner toward you.

If this happens, what should you do? It’s important to consider, because your instincts may actually be wrong.

Don’t run

Many people will be tempted to simply turn and run away. The problem is twofold. For one thing, this means that you’re turning your back on the dog, so you don’t know if you’re going to be attacked. Secondly, the dog is faster than you, so it can still catch you if it wants to. You’re not accomplishing a lot by running away.

Try to be calm

Instead of panicking and running, try to be calm. Talk to the dog in a calm voice. Don’t make eye contact, but don’t look away. Slowly begin backing away in case the dog is just acting aggressive because you’re close to its territory. If it still charges at you or tries to attack, attempt to give it something that you’re carrying, such as your purse or a coat. This can often distract the dog so that it will leave you alone long enough that you can leave the area.

You could still be injured

You can certainly still be injured, even if you’re able to do everything correctly. Dog bites can be very dangerous, especially when they become infected. Therefore you need to know about all of your options to seek financial compensation from the dog’s owner.
