Texting while driving is a serious problem across the country. It is the cause of many dangerous situations and severe accidents. A recent crash in Texas may have been the result of distracted driving. In this incident, a pickup driver swerved across traffic and plowed into a church bus carrying members who were returning from a retreat. The crash killed 13 people who were all aboard the bus. According to a report by the Associated Press, a witness stated that the driver admitted that he had been texting. This accident marks the largest number of deaths in a single distracted driving accident.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
April is dedicated to improving distracted driving awareness. The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Office of Traffic Safety (OTS, and Impact Teen Drivers (ITD), along with others, are working together this month to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. The National Safety Council, NSC, provides information and materials to educate people about the dangers of distracted driving. One of the tools they provide is a “Just Drive” pledge. The pledge is designed to ensure that drivers obey the law by agreeing not to drive while distracted.

Distracted Driving More Common Among Young Drivers
Young drivers are more likely than others to become distracted. A study completed several years ago by the University of California, San Diego, concluded that college students are more likely to be involved in a distracted driving crash than in an accident caused by alcohol use. Teens and other younger drivers commonly use their cell phones and other portable devices, and they may feel as though they can safely use their device at the same time they are driving. However, it has been found that driving requires a great deal of attention, and any form of multitasking could negatively impact a driver’s ability to act and react while behind the wheel.

California Texting While Driving Laws
California law was updated in 2017 regarding distracted driving. The new law prohibits drivers from using or even looking at their phones while behind the wheel. The driver is not allowed to hold the phone or to have it in his or her lap. A cell phone can be used hands free only if it is mounted to the dashboard. CHP has made a clear statement that they will have zero tolerance for distracted driving on California roadways. They intend to fully enforce the law.

Distracted Driving Accidents
Distracted driving continues to be a common cause of accidents. It is estimated that as many as eight people in the United States are killed every day as the result of a distracted driving accident. Additionally, more than 1100 people are injured. These numbers are based on reports and finding of distracted driving, so there are likely many more additional deaths and injuries that may be attributed to distracted driving. Unfortunately, many of these accidents result in serious or life-threatening injuries, and some people will be permanently disabled. After a severe crash, the cause must be determined. Those who were severely hurt may be entitled to compensation for their damages. Relatives of someone who died because of a distracted driver could also be able to collect money for the loss of their loved one.
